Link to a sample of your prose writing style: The Brothers Salvatore
Any other important information (including special inventory items in their possession): He has Elena's (technically, Rebekah's, technically Quetsiyah's) necklace in his possession, still. (Here, Elena, sorry for this traumatic event, here's a gift. Also, where's Uncle Jesse, his neck needs to meet my fangs that don't exist yet! He'll settle with neck/hands, too.)
Why do you think this character would join/work with the Knights? Touching on his memories, honestly, normally? He wouldn't. But, Elena being there as incentive is the one way he would if only because he believes he should look after her. Without her as a reason, if they offer him incentives, Damon has always been a man of opportunity. He doesn't exactly fit in the regular world. (Also, deep down he doesn't hate being the good guy but he'd never tell you that.)
Do you have a preference for which NPC brought in your character?Taylor Swift But, really, the three that stand out to me as NPC's Damon would react well to are Dumage, Anastacia, and Risa. (Yes, my answers are also based on who Damon would want to sleep with. At least I'm staying in character?)

Post Veil History:
Damon Salvatore had quite the introduction through the Veil. One minute, he's offering Elena her necklace back and the next he's in a completely unfamiliar apartment in New Haven - specifically, the bedroom. Before he can come up with any answers, a woman screeches (she was in the shower) and her boyfriend knocks him over the head with something.
On-campus security attempts to deal with him but they're in over their heads. Damon can't answer any questions and he doesn't respect fake officers of the law.
The next thing he knows, he's at the police station attempting to explain his story again already a 1000 percent done with this. No, he doesn't know how he got there. No, he doesn't care. No, if he'd wanted her, he'd be in bed with her. For some reason, he has no call he can make. Waiting to actually be put in jail, this could be about the time a knight takes note of him (his interaction with these cops, not quiet). His wrists may even be twist-tied.
Chosen Canon Point: 2x8 "Rose"
Personality and Psychology:
Despite his canon point, I'm taking into account Damon's entire canon to encapsulate who he is in terms of later examples!
At one time, over a hundred years ago, Damon Salvatore was an impressionable boy who loved his family. I say boy despite his age because Damon was quite naive when Katherine Pierce walked into his and his brother's lives. He was athletic, lazy and carefree. But, Katherine changed everything. Despite Damon blaming Katherine for who he is, the foundation of his personality was always there. He was an impressionable individual who wanted to see the world and to see something more. He never settled down on one thing. He joined the Confederate army and deserted them shortly after. He was wayward and impulsive. It wasn't a secret that his father was disappointed in him. Somehow, this didn't stop him and his brother Stefan from being close. They never shared a rivalry. Until Katherine. Katherine Pierce both expanded his horizons and gave him something to see beyond Mystic Falls before tearing his heart out. Unlike Stefan, Damon's love for Katherine was real. He asked to drink her blood. He watched as she dispatched humans in front of him. He wasn't scared of her. She never compelled him. She encouraged his darker side.
After dying and waking up in transition, Damon originally refused to see it through. He preferred to die. He believed Katherine had been taken by the witch hunters. Because of Stefan, he drank blood which cemented his transformation. He holds this grudge for over a hundred years. (Though, as a note, some canon flashbacks negate this idea despite the Pilot indicating as much.)
First and foremost, Damon Salvatore is not a good person. He will be the first to tell you that. He will argue this to death. He will pull away, and give you a hundred reasons why you should give up on him and shouldn't try to change him. It's been recently found out that he's spent his entire life tracking down members of the Whittemore family, killing every one save for the youngest so he/she can continue the line and he can do it all over again - all for revenge. He has no qualms with compelling a woman and sleeping with her. He will jump to violence in seconds and he will end someone's life in the blink of an eye. He rips out hybrid hearts like he's making a sandwich. He bites into people's necks. He really should come with a parental warning: violence, strong language and sexual situations. Because of this disregard of morality, to an extent, Damon is the one who makes the hard decisions - largely ignoring what everyone else wants. He bites into his wrist and feeds Elena his blood before Klaus' sacrifice because in his eyes there isn't another option, disregarding what Elena wants. She doesn't even want to be a vampire. He never asks. If he has to he will kill the bad guy, even if the bad guy used to be the good guy - or a friend. He tortures Mason Lockwood and Dr. Wes Maxfield. He tortures Mason with wolfsbane and hot fire pokers and Dr. Maxfield with various bacteria. (And currently in canon, he carves out his eyes.) He kills Vicki because her life is so sad and there's no point in her living another second. And this is after spending the afternoon partying Just like that. He's even a part of the plot to kidnap a humanity-lite Elena to shock her into feeling something. He breaks Jeremy's, Elena's brother's neck. He goes off with Katherine when things don't go his way like a petulant child. There are countless times when he makes a call without consulting anyone. He even kills Ric so the teacher can't stop him from ending Caroline's father's life. He tends to act without thinking and without regard for what anybody thinks. He kills Bonnie's mother turning her into a vampire.
This brings me to Damon Salvatore's selfishness. When we first meet him in the series, he uses Caroline Forbes for his own ends, both as a blood bag and a sex object. It takes a few episodes for him to do anything that doesn't outright help himself or hurt Stefan. Stefan has to kidnap and starve him to make a point. He kills Lexi, partially because it will give the town a scapegoat and partially because he knows it hurts Stefan. Damon wants what Damon wants and if you stand in his way there better be a good reason. (And you better be ready for a fight.) He switches alliances on a whim if it benefits him - and if in the end it would benefit Elena. He goes to Tessa in order to stop Silas once and for all despite being in league with the vampire-turned-witch for a few episodes before that. Where Stefan lets Elena come to her own conclusions, Damon constantly decides what Elena should do. He goes to great lengths to stop her from doing something. He physically restrains her and even goes in league with Bonnie to keep her in the house by spell. He's the one who tells Elena to turn off her humanity (because of a sire bond, she acquiesces).
He's flirtatious. He won't hesitate to hit on a pretty girl and make eyes at her. He flirts with every girl that breathes (and some that don't!) including Carol Lockwood. He won't hesitate to use sex as a weapon. He draws Rebekah into sex with him and his old friend, Sage. He steps up to distract Rebekah earlier while Elena and Alaric execute a plan to kidnap Stefan. Most women we meet from Damon's past, he's slept with at one time or another. He even sleeps with Lexi in the 70's - lies to her about having feelings and strands her on the roof as the sun is rising. Damon Salvatore is also well aware of how pretty he is. He's vain. He knows how great his body is and he shows it off. He has an exhibitionist streak. He has no qualms walking around the Salvatore mansion in a towel or even naked. He is not a modest person.
Damon is often times rude. He doesn't care what you think or if what he says hurts your precious feelings. He'll be the first to point out what everyone's thinking and voice it. He'll call people out without hesitation. This goes double when he's dipped into the good bourbon. Along with other Mystic Falls residents, Damon is definitely an alcoholic - of the functioning variety. An episode doesn't go by without a glass of scotch or bourbon in his hand. Damon can be sarcastic and mean. And he will make a threat as nonchalantly as if he were discussing the weather. Other peoples' problems don't matter unless they impact him. He'll let off a quip or a sarcastic comment. He loves nicknames and disrespects people with them, often. Matt Donovan is often quarterback, Caroline, vampire barbie. Sometimes, he just refers to people by what they are. He doesn't really think highly of a lot of people. (Or, he can, but he doesn't openly say so.)
Damon has a bitch of a sadistic side. As mentioned earlier, he tortures. He spends (what he believes to be) Katherine's last day of life terrorizing her with images of those she wronged and her lover Eiljah who isn't actually there. He relishes in his enemies' pain. He believes they deserve it. And even if they don't deserve it? That doesn't stop him. He holds grudges for years - as illustrated by the Whittemore's and Stefan, his own brother.
If you don't fall under the category of "Elena" or "Stefan" your first impression of him is probably going to be poor. This is either because he will be outright brash, rude and/or tactless. He just doesn't have to care. He will flirt with/hit on/insult without giving it a second thought. Most people question why Elena is even with Damon and earlier in canon, how she could ever be interested in him.
Like everything else, there are exceptions to every rule. Damon can be polite, courteous and even nice. He can keep up appearances. He goes to town council meetings. He socializes around Elena without ending lives. She tries to better him and at times he makes an effort to fit in that box she's trying to create.
Another exception happens if he respects you or thinks he can use you. He has been shown to have old friends. Usually those friends have stabbed him in the back - usually because of something he himself did. (This happened with an old friend because of Lexi's death.) His friendship with Ric develops over time. It blossoms from antagonism to an understanding. But, even his friendships have bumps. It takes a few episodes for Ric to forgive Damon for breaking his neck. Back in Season 2, Damon has to earn Elena's friendship back after what he does to Jeremy. When it comes to people he loves, his good traits aren't gone - they just aren't brought out often. They're not in front of their faces all the time. They're underneath the surface. Damon has an abrasive front. Deep down, there's something there. He has quiet, sincere moments with Elena as well as his brother and Alaric. He even takes in Jeremy after he's brought back to life (the third time). Damon has acceptable, deep and good moments. And they aren't few and far between. There are good stretches where his feelings for Elena or his devotion to his brother mean he doesn't fuck up royally.
But, this is Damon Salvatore. And to borrow a friend's idea, Damon Salvatore is why people can't have nice things. The defining trait of Damon Salvatore is his tendency to melt down and act out. When he learns that Katherine kissed him (not Elena) and she shuts down any possibility of being with him - he kills Jeremy. When Rose dies, he goes down to the road and attacks an unsuspecting girl. When things with Elena don't go anywhere in the third season, he sleeps with Rebekah. In the current season when Katherine (as Elena) breaks up with him, he regresses with the help of his best friend, Enzo. He attacks who he wants, kills the last surviving Whittemore relative - other than Dr. Maxwell. He throws everything away because "Elena" confirms he will never be a good person. When shit hits the fan, when the going gets rough, Damon Salvatore becomes his own worst enemy. He pushes everyone away and embraces his darkest sides. But, one thing he won't do is turn off his humanity. It's more accurate that he has what he describes as a dimmer switch. (He describes this in regards to Stefan but it fits him as well.) His go-to trick is to lay in the road and pray on unsuspecting drivers who are curious enough to stop and check on him.
Over time, he does become more compassionate. He chooses Andie Starr, a friend of Elena's aunt Jenna - and despite compelling her, she still seems to have her agency - besides his drinking her blood. She becomes his confidante. And when she dies, he mourns her loss. He finds a kindred spirit in Rose, a vampire associated with Katherine and Klaus. And after first deciding to be friends with benefits (because he can't be with Elena), when he has to kill her thanks to a werewolf bite, he not only sheds a tear but brings her to a paradise in her mind to ease her suffering. Deep down, Damon Salvatore has real feelings. The wildcard is what he does because of those feelings. (Or with them.)
Damon Salvatore is borderline sociopathic (and the years he turned that humanity switch off, he was one) but with it on, he is not fully sociopathic. He feels guilt. He feels loss and pain. He can also be a decent person. In Rose, after telling Elena he loves her but he doesn't deserve her he compels that memory away. This is not only selfish (because he won't have to deal with it) but selfless, because he has to live with the consequences. And Stefan deserves her more.
The most important person in Damon Salvatore's lives - in both of his lives - is Stefan Salvatore, his brother. His brother comes first before everything. No matter what they go through, they always end up on the same side. He loves his brother. He trusts his brother. He will consult his brother, bring him back from the brink, or in the opposite case, return when he's offered the chance to. But, like brothers, they fight. Literally. He's literally stabbed him with a stake. They've fought. There are times when they're on opposite sides. When Stefan does fall off the wagon, he tends to step up and become the responsible brother, especially when it comes to Elena. At first, he protects Elena both out of love but duty to his brother. But he allows himself to be selfish with one porch kiss. He does let Elena choose who she ultimately wants, however, and stays in town. When Stefan loses his memory, Damon takes him out on a joyride to help him jog it. When Stefan is compelled by Klaus, Damon rescues him from being bled dry by Lexi to have fun and remind him of what it's like, thinking reminding him of his brother will help. And in the end, Stefan's love for his brother does break Klaus' compulsion once. Even though they don't have a mantra that the Mikaelson's have, the Salvatore's are in fact in it together, always and forever.
Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore's relationship has always been complicated. At first, Elena Gilbert looked like Katherine. He saw himself in her, waiting for her parents to pick her up - she admits to him she wants to see the world. That passion draws him in. Over time, he developed real feelings for her that he kept to himself. Despite him keeping those feelings at bay she became the person he cared about most other than his brother. She doesn't take his shit and she sees the best in him. She sees what he can be. He will do anything for Elena. He would give his life for her. But, their relationship also evolves. Currently, she's the girl he doesn't believe he deserves.
In season three, they become more comfortable and more intimate. It's unspoken. They have underwritten, subtle moments. He helps train her to be able to fight against a vampire. He promises her that they will get Stefan back. When she says she can't kiss him again, he says that he knows. But, he corrects her when she says it's not right. He says, it is. Just not right now. At the time, he does believe they belong together or that it's possible. He takes her under his wing when she turns into a vampire. He shares his blood - something that is akin to sex in the vampire world. But, he also wants her to reach her full potential, even if that's not with him. He breaks up with her twice. First, because of the grossly devised sire bond (and because he can be decent human being) - and second because he reminds her that he is in fact a bad guy. She cannot change him.
In some way, Damon Salvatore will always have feelings for Elena Gilbert. They will always have a connection. And even if Damon is who she wants, if she ever gets there, he's not so sure she's the best for him.
Katherine Pierce is the final piece to the Damon puzzle. His feelings about her also evolve. At one time he loved her, hated her when he realized she was never in the tomb in the first place -- but he also begrudgingly works with her in both seasons 2 and 3. He even takes her in during Season 5 when she turns human. Their history will always be something between them but the 100th episode proved that his grudge against her has never really listed. Foolishly, he does blame her for everything. (As an aside, I hated the characterization choice after everything else, but it's my job to justify - not complain.) He will always have complicated if negative feelings towards her. But Katherine telling him she never loved him? Drove the final nail in that coffin. Where he is in canon? Katherine's a necessary nuisance - and now she's harmless as she's a human who's rapidly aging. He chooses to disregard Katherine's motivations or her past. He doesn't care. Katherine Pierce is a she devil and a murderous slut. Excuse the language but he has passionate, passionate love-hate towards her and that will always be true.
Memories Retained or Lost:
Damon will be losing almost everything. His history, including his best friendship with his brother, Katherine's betrayal, his vampirism will all be somewhere in his mind in a vague, that happened way. Because this is Damon Salvatore, he will be having two exceptions. Damon is proud to be a Salvatore. It's a big part of him. So he will remember Stefan being his brother, having a brother and having a roller-coaster ride of a sibling relationship. His other exception will be Elena. He'll know her first name and that she's dating his brother and that he doesn't deserve her. (The loophole will be the Elena connection won't be unlocked till he sees her, so he won't be trying to get back anywhere. Just, trying to figure out how he got there, if that makes sense!) And I am fine with editing any of this to what would suit you. This was discussed and agreed upon with Elena's writer.
As for everything else, he has to slowly remember what he is (a vampire) and what that means/what he can probably do. Once he hears the word 'vampire' that part of him clicks but nothing else beyond that. It doesn't occur to him to get in touch with his brother, just that he has one.
Powers and Abilities:
*this is all canon, I have starred the vampire character sheet and am ready to full embrace the nature of this game's vampire!
Damon Salvatore is a vampire. This means he has...
☓ enhanced speed, ontop of that, the ability to "appear" behind you/in rooms super quietly.
☓ appearing in a flash, essentially.
☓ the ability to jump really high
☓ enhanced strength
☓ enhanced senses (sight, smell, taste and especially hearing, vampires can hear conversations from across a room)
☓ when the fangs come out, his eyes go black, red-black veins protrude outward (this also happens when he's hungry)
☓ the ability to compel a human not on vervain - this is making eye contact and getting them to do something/say something/forget that anything happened whatsoever m
☓ he can manipulate a persons' dream state, especially when they're weakened, this is easier with humans
☓ early in the series, and through the character of lexi, it's been illustrated that some older vampires can fabricate illusions. Lexi causes Stefan to think he's been starving for years, while Damon wastes his time manipulating fog and sending a crow places. he hardly ever uses this, just making a note of it to be thorough
☓ a vampire can never age, and they heal faster from injuries
☓ his blood can also heal a human's injuries
☓ if he feeds you his blood and you die, you wake up in transition to become a vampire
☓ Damon Salvatore is also charismatic enough for this to be an ability. Let's be honest.
Being a vampire also means there are weaknesses...
☓ a vampire needs to be invited into a dwelling
☓ a vampire can't walk into the sunlight, but damon has a ring courtesy of a witch named emily bennett that lets him walk in the sun
☓ fire, a stake through the heart, sunlight, and a werewolf (or hybrid) bite are all lethal to vampires.
☓ vervain weakens a vampire if ingested or injected. it also burns. (but it also keeps an original vampire from being able to compel them)
☓ being stabbed by anything wooden is excruciating but not fatal, this is the same with wooden bullets
☓ feeding on animal blood makes a vampire weaker than say if they fed on human blood (which damon does, usually from a bag depending on canon point)
☓ older vampires are stronger but hybrids do seem to be the exception.
